Au Pair Programme France

Pocket money, working hours, time off & Co.

You are interested in topics such as working hours, time off, pocket money, holiday and language course? The following page provides you with the most important information concerning the au pair programme "stagiaire aide familial étranger".

Work contents

In exchange for board and lodging you will take care of your host family's children and help them by taking over light housework tasks. Prior to starting off on your journey, you should talk to your host family about  the typical tasks you will have to carry out. Your exact tasks need to be included in your au pair contract.

Pocket money

According to what you have agreed upon with your host family, you will earn between 258 € and 309.60 € per month. You need to state the exact amount in your au pair contract.

Board and lodging

In exchange for your help with the children and light housework, you are entitled to free board and lodging. As you are considered a member of the family, you will get an individual room.

Placement period

You can only participate in the programme "stagiaire aide familial étranger" if you stay for a minimum of 3 and a maximum of 12 months. The maximum period can be extended to 18 months.

Working hours

You will maximally work 5 hours per day and 30 hours per week. Your working hours need to allow you to participate in a French language course or course about French culture and civilisation.

Time off

You are entitled to at least one full day off per week. Once every month, this day should be a Sunday.

Holiday

There are no specific regulations concerning the holidays an au pair is entitled to. Therefore, you should come to an agreement with your host family before you start working in their home.

French course

It is compulsory for au pairs to participate in a French course for foreign citizens. You will need to bear the cost for this course. However, your host family should sign you up. After all, they know their way around their own city. Language courses are offered by universities, adult education centres and other organisations. You can take a course which lasts an entire year, term or summer.

Exception: If you have already completed one year of higher education in France, you do not need to participate in a French course if your stay as an au pair coincides with your term break.

Termination of contract

The French contract is signed for the duration of the au pair placement. However, it is possible to terminate the contract before the due date, for instance, if you do not get along well with your host family. According to the European Agreement on the Au Pair Placement, there is a 2 weeks' notice period for contracts signed for an indefinite period. In serious cases, it is possible to terminate the contract without notice.
