Contract
You should discuss your mutual expectations together with your future host family prior to departure. You should include all points you agree upon in your contract. In Italy, there is no official standard au pair contract. However, you can download the European contract from our site. You can change it according to your requirements.
Health insurance
If you do not intend to stay more than 3 months in Italy, you can possibly stay covered by your health insurance at home. You should clarify this matter prior to your departure.
Alternatively and if you wish to stay longer, your host family can insure you at the public Italian health insurance (Servizio Sanitario Nazionale). Your host family will bear the costs for this purpose. As a prerequisite, you should have a residence permit (permesso di soggiorno) and an Italian tax number, the Codice fiscale.
Car driving and driving licence
You should clarify beforehand if your host family expects you to drive their car. Should this be the case, you ought to find out if your driving licence is valid in your host country. It is possible that you have to apply for an international driving licence. What happens in case of damage? Who bears the costs? You should talk this over and jot down everything.
Safety
You should definitely discuss many details concerning your au pair stay with your host family. We recommend that you speak on the phone or via Skype several times. Thus, you will be able to clarify important questions, such as: When will you arrive? Will your host family pick you up? Do not forget to write down your host family's phone number so that you can give them a ring if anything goes wrong. Furthermore, you should save emergency numbers and the address and phone number of the closest hotel to your host family's home, just to be on the safe side.
