Au Pair Programme NetherlandsPocket money, working hours, time off & Co
Here you will find useful information about pocket money, working hours, time off and other details concerning your au pair placement.
DutiesAs an au pair, providing childcare is your main responsibility. Furthermore, doing light housework will be part of your job as well. ContractYou and your family should clarify in advance what you expect from each other and sign a contract that includes your work schedule. Moreover, the au pair contract is mandatory for citizens who need a regular residence permit or a regular provisional residence permit (Machtiging tot Voorlopig verblijf, MVV). Consult our page on visa and regulations for non-EU citizens to find out more. Pocket moneyIn the Netherlands, you will receive between 300 and 340 euros per month as pocket money. The host family has to cover the costs for health and liability insurances as well. Board and lodgingBesides pocket money, you receive free board and lodging. You are entitled to food and accommodation in cases of illness and during your holiday as well. Working hoursIn the Netherlands, you are not allowed to work more than 8 hours a day (babysitting hours included) and 30 hours per week, spread out over a maximum of 5 days a week. Moreover, babysitting is restricted to 3 evenings a week. Time offAs an au pair in the Netherlands, you are entitled to a minimum of two evenings and two days off per week, and at least one whole weekend a month. HolidayYou should get 2 weeks of holiday minimum per 12 months. You and your host families can take this value as a basis for calculating the amount of holiday in case of a shorter placement. Language course
As an au pair, you should have the possibility to take part in a Dutch language course. Your host family has to pay up to 230 euros per year for your language course. Do not hesitate to ask your host family to assist you in finding proper offers within their area. Contract terminationThe au pair contract remains valid for the whole period of your au pair stay. However, you are allowed to break the contract before it expires if you and your host family cannot get along for example. We recommend a period of notice of 14 days. This allows both the au pair and the host family to find a replacement and organise the return trip. The au pair contract can also be terminated immediately without any period of notice on serious grounds.
