Au Pair Programme Netherlands

Contract, insurance, driving licence & Co.

Here you will find some information on au pair related topics, such as au pair contract, insurance and safety.

Contract

The host family and the future au pair should always clarify in advance what they expect from each other and sign a contract in which the most important points are defined. Thus, any future disappointments can be avoided. Moreover, the au pair contract is mandatory for citizens who need a regular residence permit or a provisional residence permit (Machtiging tot Voorlopig verblijf, MVV). Consult our page on Visa and regulations for non-EU citizens to find out more. You can also find a template of the Dutch au pair contract on our website.

Health insurance

In the Netherlands, the host family has to subscribe to a health and accident insurance for their au pair. It is also compulsory to insure the au pair for repatriation. Find out more about the Dutch au pair insurances, such as the Young Global Traveler health insurance from the OOM insurance company or the ISIS Au pair insurance from the JoHo insurance provider.

Is your au pair an EU citizen? In this case, the au pair should find out whether his/her health insurance at home remains valid during the au pair placement in the Netherlands. He/she will have to ask a European health insurance card from his/her health insurance company. This card needs to be presented to the attending physician in the Netherlands.

Alternatively, the au pair may register with the Dutch health and social insurance upon arrival in the host country. In this case, the au pair should follow the registration procedure for non-EU citizens (see below). The Dutch health insurance will cover the costs of your au pair should he/she fall ill during the stay.

Is your au pair a non-EU citizen? The au pair should then contact one of the local health insurance offices in the Netherlands. It will cover the costs should he/she fall ill during the au pair stay. Find a health insurance office in your area for your au pair. They will give you more information on local doctors (huisarts) and dentists (tandarts) and on how to register with a practice. Ask your au pair to bring along all evidence so as to have all necessary documents at hand.

Driving and driving licence

Many host families require an au pair who holds a driving licence. Moreover, he/she needs sufficient driving experience.

You probably want your au pair to drive. You should therefore clarify beforehand all issues of liability and insurance. Should any damages result from an accident, it should be clear beforehand who will have to bear the costs.

Furthermore, enquire prior to your au pair's arrival whether or not his/her driving licence is also valid in the Netherlands.

Be on the safe side:

  • Have you already spoken to your au pair personally? During a telephone conversation, you can quickly find out how well you get along with each other. Read more about our Safety tips.
  • Make sure that your au pair already has a basic knowledge of Dutch. It will make it easier for him/her to express wishes and needs from the beginning. Bear in mind that having sufficient vocabulary at hand will be very useful for your au pair in case of illness or when left alone with your children.
