Do I need to go through an au pair agency
No. In most countries neither the au pair nor the host family has to make use of an agency. The only exception is America (U.S.A.). To become a legal au pair in the USA you need to have a J1-Visa. You can only apply for this J1-Visa if you go through one of the six federally designated au pair agencies.
It is well known that there are many au pairs in America on a tourist visa but we recommend that you search and find your au pair / host family on Aupair World and then use the services of one of the six licenced agencies in the US to apply for a J1-visa.
